How to Add an Authenticated ArcGIS Online REST Layer to NRDS Custom Maps
1. Confirm the authenticated ArcGIS layer is working 0:00
The demo starts by showing an authenticated ArcGIS Online layer already loading in NRDS.
A login prompt appears, which confirms the layer requires authentication.
After successful login, the layer data appears on the map as plant points.
This verifies that the authenticated REST layer can be accessed before adding it to NRDS.
2. Add the layer through the NRDS Layers menu 1:02
In NRDS, go to Add Data → Layers.
Choose the appropriate layer category, such as plants.
Select Endpoint Type: REST endpoint.
Choose the geometry type, such as points.
Paste the copied endpoint URL into the endpoint field.
3. Enable endpoint authentication and save 1:21
Because this is an authenticated layer, NRDS will indicate that a token is required.
Turn on or confirm Require endpoint authentication.
Click Save.
If the connection is successful, NRDS will show a sample of the returned data at the bottom of the screen.
Switch back to the list view if needed to confirm the preview data is loading correctly.
4. Add the same REST layer through Map Settings if preferred 1:57
You can also add the layer from Map Settings.
Open Custom Map Layers → Add Layer.
Again choose REST as the source type.
Set the layer type to Point.
Paste the endpoint URL, enable authentication, and save.
Use the preview to confirm the data is being pulled in correctly.
5. Understand authentication behavior after setup 2:41
Authenticated access is not permanent.
The login/token may expire after a period of time.
When that happens, you may need to log in again.
The exact duration depends on how the ArcGIS authentication is configured.
6. Use the layer in maps and optionally style it 3:02
Once added, the layer becomes available for use in custom maps.
NRDS can also work with non-authenticated REST layers in the same way.
For REST layers, you can also apply symbology.
The video closes by summarizing that NRDS supports adding ArcGIS / Esri REST endpoints to custom maps.
